Ministries of Highland Baptist Church

Highland Baptist Church has many ministries in place to carry out the purpose and work of the church. These ministries offer every member of the church an opportunity to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ as well as serve in areas of leadership and/or encouragement. The following information is provided to give a brief introduction to many of the church ministries.

Sunday School Ministry
The Sunday School meets at 9:45 AM every Sunday morning for small group Bible study and is age grouped to provide a class setting for every member regardless of their age. The Sunday School focuses on 6 primary tasks:

  • Teach people the Bible.
  • Reach people.
  • Care for people.
  • Witness to people.
  • Fellowship with people.
  • Lead people to understand worship.
The Sunday School is a key component in enabling the church to effectively involve a large number of people in small group Bible Study. Sunday School is available to everyone, including non-church members. The Sunday School ministry continues all through the week as members carry out the tasks listed above.

Discipleship Ministry
The discipleship ministry is important to the church in carrying out the Great Commission. As a church we are responsible to teach believers how to obey the teachings of Jesus Christ. As persons learn to obey they grow in relationship with the Lord. The goal is to develop believers who in turn can teach other believers how to obey Jesus teachings.

Highland Baptist Church carries out discipleship in four primary areas:

  • New Member/Christian training - This discipleship guides the new Christian or member into a clear understanding of the basics of our faith. It is a small group study that enables question and answer discussion. Topics range from understanding salvation to using spiritual gifts, all from the perspective of the new Christian/member.
  • Short-term study groups - There is a large number of study groups that can be offered for the studious Christian that desires to grow. Everything from doctrine, family enrichment, which includes parenting and marriage, witnessing, servanthood and personal spiritual growth are among the topics available through short-term studies. These studies last from 4 to 13 weeks. Many of these studies are oriented to specific target groups like: Women’s Discipleship Groups and Men’s Discipleship Groups.
  • Children’s Wednesday Night Program - Family Night has a full line up of children’s ministry/discipleship opportunities. Music, missions, Bible drill, and special discipleship studies are available to children grades 1-5. Children can choose which study/program they want to participate in during the fall and during the spring. For preschoolers 3-K, children are active in learning truths from God’s Word.
  • Leadership training - There are many training studies available through the discipleship ministry to help “equip the saints for works of service”. Whether it is training for a new Sunday School teacher, youth worker, deacon, discipleship leader or committee member training can be provided. Studies vary in length from a one-day seminar to several months.

Music Ministry
The music ministry of Highland Baptist Church includes much more than singing on Sunday mornings. The music ministry has a vital role in the congregational worship of the church family. The music ministry requires active participation from all of the church family even though the amount of participation will differ greatly due to involvement in areas of worship leadership. There are many ways to be involved in the music ministry.

  • Adult Choir: The adult choir is open to youth and adults. The choir works to present worship presentations during special times of the year, such as Christmas and Easter. There is a weekly rehearsal for the choir to prepare these presentations.
  • Instrumental Ensemble: This group is for youth and adults who play instruments and would like to use their talents and abilities to support music leadership during worship. The ensemble rehearses once a week and will provide worship meditations or special presentations throughout the year.
  • Praise Teams: These special groups of vocalists and instrumentalists help to support and lead congregational singing during worship services. Adults and youth are invited to participate. Some music/sight reading is helpful.
