How to Become a Christian

God loves us and desires that we have a full and meaningful life. There is much confusion today as to what exactly a Christian is. Many believe a Christian is someone who goes to Church, follows the “Golden Rule”, keeps the Ten Commandments, or leads a good and honest life. The Bible, as our source of spiritual understanding, has a lot to say regarding what a Christian actually is. From the Biblical perspective, a Christian is an individual that has a personal relationship with the living God through Jesus Christ that is real and dynamic.

The problem facing humanity is the separation between the perfect God and mankind. This separation is called sin. Being the fact that we are all born into this condition God made miraculous effort to reach us. God has clearly set forth a plan in the Bible to deal with our condition and to provide an eternal relationship with Him.

There are four basic truths that we need to understand.

Truth #1: We all have sinned.
“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23) Sin means breaking God’s law. We do this in action, thought, and deed. The bible says that we all sin.

Truth #2: Sin brings spiritual death.
“For the wages of sin is death. But the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) This death is spiritual death that separates us from God. Our own personal sin destroys us. But God loves us regardless and offers us eternal life through Jesus.

Truth #3: Christ died for our sins.
But God demonstrates His love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Jesus paid the penalty for our sins by His death on the cross. When we receive Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord we begin a new love relationship. We now have complete forgiveness of our sin and secured eternal life with God.

Truth #4: Call upon Christ and you will be saved.
The Bible continues to share, “Whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13) We call upon Him to be saved by a simple prayer. This prayer can be voiced something like this:

Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I have sinned. I know that You came to die for the sins of the world. I ask that You forgive me and I invite You to come into my life to save me. I now receive You as my Lord and Savior and I turn my life over to You. From this point on I ask that You help me to live a life pleasing to You in everything.

In Jesus Name, Amen
